White’s Sheffield District Directory.
The White’s Sheffield District Directories.
White’s Sheffield District Directory is a historical directory that provides information about the city of Sheffield and its surrounding districts. Directories like these were common in the 19th and early 20th centuries and served as valuable resources for residents, businesses, and researchers aiding in their search for companies, people and information.
The first White’s Directory was released in 1833 and over the years, subsequent editions of the directory were published, reflecting the changing demographics, businesses, and landscape of Sheffield and its vicinity but one thing in particular remained constant… the appearance of William Whiteley & Sons and/or Thomas Wilkinson & Sons! Given that we had already been established for 73 years (potentially more) when the first addition was released we likely appeared in every single addition made.
We are lucky enough to own an almost fully intact copy from 1915 where you can see our name and original trademarks alongside 1000’s of other Sheffield manufacturers but unfortunately all but a small few have now ceased trading.
Seeing these historical books like this one really puts into perspective just how long we have been hand crafting scissors and shears here in Sheffield, handing down craftsmanship, knowledge and patterns for over 11 generations and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!
